To start, my name is Logan, I am 23 and have been dealing with chronic pain that is worse on the right side of my body for 7 years. My symptoms include muscle spasms (knots), muscle twitching, scapular winging (which has been resolved with surgery), and herniated disc at L5-S1 with sciatica. My main issue (and the reason I created this forum) is I have tight muscles on the right side of my body that will not relax; this exacerbates the underlying conditions I have such as the herniated disc and makes it hard to recover. This includes my neck, traps, shoulder blade areas, lats, glutes, hamstrings, IT bands, and calves. I have tried physical therapy, dry needling, yoga, graston, cupping, chiropractor, massage, cymbalta, and muscle relaxers. Muscle relaxers and dry needling on my shoulder blade help although it is always temporary. Cymbalta also helped but the side effects were too much. I really want to find the root cause of these symptoms. I have ruled out ALS, MS, and any types of arthritis. I have been to 20-30 doctors including neurologists, rheumatologists, shoulder/back doctors, and pain management doctors. I am trying to get into the Mayo clinic but have been denied multiple times.
My current trajectory in my search for answers is to start with the basic possible causes and then move into more complex causes such as diseases. I started a regiment of vitamins supplements including calcium, potassium, magnesium, a multivitamin, and am planning on adding a Vitamin D supplement to this regiment. It has only been 2 weeks but I will update the results after a month or two. I also have started drinking the recommended 15 cups of water a day to rule out dehydration as a possible cause. I will say I have noticed almost no muscle twitching since starting the water, but still have the spasms which is the main complaint. Thanks for reading and please contribute to the forum with your story/theories/treatments!

Hi,
I have had a similar problem for just over a year; tight muscles and tension in my whole right side of my body from the bottom of my foot, calf, hamstring, glute, rib cage, up to my neck, including my right shoulder and arm, and sometimes even up the right side of my face and head.
Doctors and therapists dont know what to do with me. My GP doctor basically insinuated I was faking and implied I have back pain with low pain tolerance. Everytime I tell her it's not just my back and that it's my whole right side she stares at me like a deer in the headlights and tells me it doesnt make sense.
I've also had xrays, catscans, MRI's, chiro, physio, acupuncture, dry needling, massage, muscle relaxers, prescription anti-inflammatories, and they recently prescribed me an antidepressant because apparently that can help tension (?) However I am hesitant to try those because I dont like the sound of the side affects. I am also trying trigger point injections and had one session so far that seemed to work somewhat in the small spot they poked the needle, I am going back and begging them to poke me like a pin cushion all over the right side of my body- to be determined.
I have searched the web for over a year trying to figure out what is wrong with me and I cant find anything that describes my condition. All of my blood tests seem to come back completely perfectly normal. I've also been guzzling water as much as I can in case its dehydration, I cant say for sure if it had helped or not. I'm also taking flaxseed supplements and including healthy fats in my diet way more on recommendation from a therapist.
My bones are being yanked by the tightness so my hips are constantly popping in and out of joint and my lower back is pulled and my rib cage and shoulder, it litterally looks like my right side of my body is 'scrunched' up.
I can't believe you've had this problem for 7 years!? I'm already at my wits end and struggle to make it through a week without breaking down at least once. The worst is not being understood by the doctors and feeling completely alone with this condition, it's as if it's some new alien disease no one knows about.
I would love to talk more with you!!!

...... I'd like to compare our cases, to see if we can find any similarities.
- How did the problem show up for you, what was/were the very first onset symptoms?
-Are you physically active and were you exercising a lot when the problem came on? Any main event or injury that caused it?
-have you had any other 'unrelated' health conditions or problems before the problem came on?
-is there a reason you suspected you may be dehydrated? Over exercising? Eating dryer foods? Alcohol consumption? Etc etc.
-what is your emotional life like? Was there any high stress or trauma events around the time the problem occurred?
-Are you right or left handed? Is one side of your body much stronger than the other side?
-do you have any indications that the muscle tightness is related to stress and possibly originating from the flight or fight reaction in the psoas of the hip?
I have so many more questions but I'll leave it at that for now and hopefully hear from you!
Thank-you!

Hi all! There are so many similarities between what we all experience! I have been dealing with pain since 2004 (16 years)! It all started after I ran a marathon. Pain started in my hip joint and over the years it has spread up and down my body. My lower back, right QL started getting super tight, then right TFL, IT band, right psoas and illiacus, right adductor, right quad and knee and is now affecting my right foot as well. Years down the road I also began having pain in my right shoulder which was diagnosed as a tear and impingement. To add to that I also have pain upper/middle back only on my right side. I have a tight neck on both sides, but that is the only part that's on both sides of my body. Since the marathon, I have been trying to stay active. I weight lift (not heavy) and still run once in a while but I pay for it the next day when I get pain. There was a period of about 3 months when I didn't exercise and it hurts as well, so rest didn't help any. I have no other health condition that could have contributed to this. Pain gets worse if I am stressed, anxious or if I didn't get enough sleep. It also seems to decrease when I'm on vacation so that makes me think it's stress related. I am right handed so maybe that's contributing as well. I have seen many specialists and they all have different diagnosis, from anterior pelvic tilt, unstable SI joint, unaligned atlas, weak pelvic floor, weak right glute and psoas, tight right psoas, to emotional trauma from the past and it's all in your head. MRIs show nothing except for a little big of inflammation, a tiny tear on my hamstring which said was nothing and my shoulder is impinged. I have done lots of PT, massage, chiro, acupuncture, Prolozone injections, foundation training, strength training, meditation, NKT, trigger point therapy, graston technique. What helps? I love my foam roller and yoga balls to release the tight muscles and I try to activate the "sleeping muscles" which seems to help. I love getting deep massages and feel amazing after a chiro treatment (I just found a good one that adjusted my atlas). Nothing lasts very long though, so have to keep doing daily exercises. Most of the time pain is not severe, maybe 3-4 out of 10 so I just deal with it on daily basis. My original goal was to get out of pain completely, but at this point I am just trying to manage it as best as I can and figure out what helps it and I would like to get to a point where I don't have to worry about getting a hip replacement when I'm older! My best guess is that my body is a master of compensation. One muscle got lazy long ago, when my alignment was off and my body compensated and learned how to activate other muscles to help keep the body upright. I didn't do the "right" treatment from the get go and the compensation spread affecting other muscles. I can't wait to read some other responses!

It does sound like there are quite a lot of similarities! What did you/do you do for a living? Any long term desk work? Or any repetitive actions with your right side like factory work, or typing, holding a phone, hammering...etc? I like what you shared about how it hurts less on vacation, this is insightful! Did you find trigger point helped? I have just finished my second session and so far it seems to be loosening certain muscles significantly. Did you experience any relief from TP? You said it hurts the next day after you run, what kind of pain do you get? Is it a tightness all over? Does your pelvis have an anterior tilt? Do you find your back is hyper extended? I going to see a neurologist next month, I pray she finds something!! Have you been to a neurologist? Thanks again so much for your message!! Hopefully we can talk more!

Wow, I stumbled upon this forum just now and I am so thankful to know I'm not the only one - 24 yr old, healthy, good physical shape, but learning more about posture and working at correcting my imbalances over the last few years has made my right sided muscle stiffness & trigger points much more apparent. I have been struggling with this for a long time now. I will edit this reply or post another one with my story. Thank you for making this website.

Possible Diagnosis
Hi all, I am a 20 year old college student. I have been dealing with tfh Bess on the right side of my body for as long as I can remember. I can’t seem to relax the muscles, and it gets worse when I don’t sleep or am stressed. The pain can be very bad, and interferes with my college studies.
I have come across two conditions that may explain this: Verical Heterophoria and Superior Oblique Palsy. They are two eye conditions that are from the weakness in the vertical rectus and superior oblique muscles of the eyes respectively. Basically, one of the eye muscles is shot and in order to keep yourself from getting double vision, your body tightens on one side to keep one eye above the other at all times.
Try this- patch one eye for 10 minutes and see if you feel less tight. If not, switch eyes and see if it works. If your symptoms improve you may have this.

Hi Folks,
Me again... So, now I'm booked with a Rheumatologist and the doctors are thinking the tightness in my entire right side of my body is linked to a possible autoimmune disorder, still no official diagnosis though. Trigger point helps to loosen specific areas but other new areas tighten after others are loosened so I mostly just feel like a Jenga game tower right now. I'm currently completely twisted with my rib cage twisted to the left because some tight muscles are pulling and other areas have been loosened. It would take years to trigger point the whole right side of my body, if not decades. I asked my Neurologist about the eye conditions that were mentioned in this thread but the Neuro said it would only affect my head, not my whole body down to my toes. So...guess not? I Would love to hear more from everyone here and hear how your progress is going! Hope you're all doing okay!

Pain and stiffness on the right side of the body. I was surprised to come across this forum as I spent yet another sleepless night with thrumming pain in my right side shoulder back hip knee calves ankles and big toe! I am 59 years old , fit but not particularly athletic. I’ve always enjoyed swimming and walking and used to run 5 k in the mornings until my knees started to hurt. I put it down to having flat feet and unsupported running shoes. That was about 18 years ago. The tightening of my right side however started presenting around 7 years ago. Firstly it was really stiff neck and shoulder pain for which I received acupuncture. This fixed the problem momentarily but it would return months later. Some six years ago however the stiffness moved down towards my hip and down the right side of my leg making it ache . I had xrays done of my knees and hips but these showed only mild arthritis and some loss of cartilage in the knee socket. Doctor could not explain the pain advised I see a physiotherapist to loosen the muscles. This also worked momentarily but the stiffness would return weeks later. ( the pain free periods were getting shorter) At the same time I was receiving chiropractic manipulation and acupuncture. Two practitioners remarked that I needed to relax in order for my muscles to relax which were extremely tight down my right side. They suggested Meditation and Yoga. Meditation has helped me enormously and Yoga was a little difficult with the stiffness in the knees. I went back and forth to my doctor and the various massage and acupuncture practitioners to alleviate the pain. Doctor prescribed Movalis as a muscle relaxer and to lower joint inflammation. That works while taking it but I am not one to take pills for my ills. So I stopped taking it. I trust my body to know what it needs to heal . That’s what I thought and still believe. I couldn’t however ignore the pain. At my health food store I was recommended a product called Organic Sulphur, 1 teaspoon to be taken daily . I had no experience or expectations of this product. But thought it couldn’t hurt and gave it a go. After I week I was surprised to notice that I had no pain whatsoever. I continued taking it for the next 12 months and was pain free Yeay! Recently however in the last 3 months the stiffness has returned and so has the pain. I have started taking the Organic Sulphur again . The pain has somewhat lessened but not as dramatically as the first time I used it. Odd! Like all of you here I would like to reach the root cause of the stiffness and pain down the right side of the body. My doctors have not given me any clear answers and I don’t personally know any one who has experienced it. So it can feel that it’s all in my head and I am making the whole thing up. I am a generally happy and positive person who enjoys cheering people up and being playful and having fun . I value my life, my body and all that life has to offer. I don’t have a victim mentality do I tend to keep my pain issues to myself. ( I find it mind numbingly boring when people relate to me their health issues in minute detail! ) But you guys are all so very articulate and truthful .
Thank you for sharing and listening Deborah

Hey Everyone,
I'm not sure how often this forum is used or if anyone still checks in but I've been dealing with a lot of the same problems. Right sided (I'm right handed) pain, aches, tightness, stiffness, etc. My muscles chronically feel tight. I can use the muscles in the right side of my body freely without any issues, but they are always stiff, tight and aching. It's now lead to joint pain in my right shoulder, wrist, knee and ankle. It's such a strange sensation and hard to explain. The stiffness in my right leg is by far the worst. I also have a great deal of muscle twitching body wide, but 95% of it is in the right side of my body. Typically if I'm stressed or anxious my right leg really tightens up. When it finally loosens it starts to twitch quite a bit. My leg really gets aggravated if I'm standing for an extended period or if I'm working in the kitchen over the counter (this makes me think it's related to my spine/posture).
I've been to a variety of doctors. I saw a neurologist because of the twitching and had an EMG test done. He said whatever is causing the twitching seems benign and try to take some magnesium. I've had loads of blood work done. The one interesting test that's still being investigated is the SPEP test. My IgA protein levels have been elevated on two occasions now (polyclonal band). The doctor thinks it's non specific and said not to worry about it... However I have to get it tested again in a month's time to see if there's been any change.
I did used to commute a lot to and from work which maybe impacted my posture. Otherwise, due to the muscle twitching I'm fairly confident I have BFS (Benign Fasciculation Syndrome). It includes muscle twitching and muscle tightness/stiffness as symptoms, which would make a lot of sense. There isn't a lot of research on BFS so there doesn't seem to be any cure/remedy for the symptoms aside from reducing stress/anxiety. I personally wouldn't be surprised at all if stress/anxiety are the cause of these symptoms.
Anyways, if I do happen to find some sort of cure/relief I'll be sure to pop back in here and update everyone. Good luck!
PS. I am 32M and in relatively decent shape. It's been one year since it all began for me. I do recall a day last year when I decided to play hockey and then go cross country skiing that same night which is roughly when I recall my symptoms beginning. I wonder if muscle exhaustion can trigger problems like this? who knows!

Pain started in my right hip 5 years ago. It has now moved down the IT band and down to my ankle and foot. Also, tightness and discomfort right mid back/ribs. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi all,
Was a competitive runner for 19 years. 2 Decembers ago, I had severe low back spasms. The following June, I had issues with my right arm and elbow. I went to occupational therapy for it over the next few months. Then I realized that maybe it wasn't my arm, it was a knot in my back that was affecting function in my right arm. I then had an odd debilitating cramping of my right calf. the next few months, the pain, tightness and knots then affected everything from my right ankle to my neck, and even my ear. (it only hurts my right ear to wear a face mask). I've had numerous labs done, as one of the physicians I was hypothesized rheumatism or lyme's disease. The labs were clear. Like other people who have experienced this problem, doctors don't understand and all prescribe pain relief which is not the answer I am seeking. I really would like to get down to bottom of this in order to find relief. I start physical therapy tomorrow. I am in Germany so I haven't located a sports medicine doctor who speaks English. There are a lot of people who have written here about their pain, but no one seems to follow up with findings or relief. Would love if anyone could write about a successful recovery.
